Stela Barbieri has been working on a project called “The School Goes to the Movies” since 1993. During this period, she created many correlative activities, always together with Professor Patricia Durães. In this project, they do not only show a movie, but they also elaborate workshops, debates and activities for the better understanding of that movie and also to help give a further comprehension of the main topics it brings up. The idea is to bring together different ways of expression, connecting multiple areas of our knowledge. That will improve the mind, creating a more critic spectator, also more active in the society.
The ideas presented during this project comprise a great diversity of actions. Always linked to the main topics broached by the movie, and in order to have a deeper vision about those, “The School Goes to the Movies” proposes activities of visual investigation, shadow theater, poetry, dance, modeling, collage and story-telling (biographies, History, stories of the oral tradition, among others). These are some of the exercises people have made: Linea in Monet’s Garden, Red balloon, Kirikou and the Sorceress, and Princes and Princesses.
This project first started in Rio de Janeiro, in 1985, arriving in São Paulo in 1993. It was created inside “Circuito Espaço de Cinema” (Space of the Cinema Cultural Center), and has been coordinated by Patricia Durães and Eliane Monetiro since the beginning. It suggests a cultural dive through the world of movies, helping the training and formation of many educators and students.
Outside Rio and São Paulo, “The School Goes to the Movies” had some especial features in Uberlândia, Porto Alegre, Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo, Volta Redonda, Fortaleza, Juiz de For a and Belo Horizonte.
